Stories of Change - Ayan

Updated: Nov 5

Ayan currently resides with his family in a Chitpur community temporary shelter at the age of four. The structure of their home consists of bamboo poles and plastic sheets which provide no effective defense against weather conditions. He has two brothers and a sister. His mother works every day to support their family because his father suffers from a neurological condition that prevents him from getting stable work.

When Ayan first enrolled in the Cathy O’Shaughnessy Crèche, his teachers quickly noticed that he was much quieter than the other children. The student paid attention in class but he never participated in class discussions or showed interest in talking to his classmates. He was particularly sensitive to loud noises and often withdrew when the other children sang or played.

Ayan was referred for an eye test at HOPE Hospital, but he showed no reaction when eye drops were administered. This response raised further concerns, and with the support of HOPE’s special educators, the crèche teachers identified Ayan as a child with special needs.

The special educators dedicated themselves to support Ayan by creating specific teaching approaches which combined with crèche staff efforts to develop interactive learning methods suitable for his requirements. The program exposed him to creative activities which included arts and crafts and puzzles and the educational approach of "Four Corners."He joined storytelling activities which helped him build confidence while strengthening his interest in the subject.

Ayan revealed his authentic nature to others through his daily activities which he performed consistently. Today, he responds and interacts with his teachers, identifies alphabets, colours, shapes, and animals using flashcards, and enthusiastically participates in events and celebrations at the crèche.

Ayan’s transformation is a testament to the power of patient guidance, inclusive education, and compassionate care. His journey continues to inspire everyone around him.
