Stories of Change - Amirah

Updated: Nov 5

Amirah is one of the newest children at the crèche. I encountered her during my previous year's visit to the facility where I observed her remarkable advancement. Amirah was born with visual impairment at birth and she is now three years old. Her father is unable to work due to health issues, and her mother supports the family by breaking glass for recycling in the local community.

Amirah showed comfort only when she was with her mother during her first days at the crèche. She needed to spend some time before she could establish a sense of safety in her new surroundings. Understanding her needs, the crèche teachers welcomed her mother to stay until Amirah felt safe enough to participate in activities. The staff members worked at a slow pace to help her adjust to being in the classroom environment.

To support her unique learning needs, the teachers, alongside special educators from The HOPE Foundation, developed customised, tactile learning materials. The staff employed educational games with touch and sound features to teach Amirah through interactive play which provided her with an enjoyable and inclusive learning experience.

Over the past six months, Amirah has blossomed. She now actively participates in classroom activities while interacting with classmates and demonstrating the ability to identify letters and numbers through touch. Her confidence has grown stronger while her face remains constantly happy from her smiling.

The support of our donors made it possible for her to continue her education. Your support created a protected environment which enabled Amirah to develop while providing her with essential tools to handle all obstacles she faced. Thank you for being a part of her journey.
